Hair Extensions For Licensed Cosmetologists. Cosmetology License Required.
Hair extensions are a licensed service. Most states require an active cosmetology license to install them. The brands you buy from should care about that — but most don't. Alma does. We require a verified cosmetology license before granting wholesale ALMAPRO access. No exceptions.
Here's why that matters and how the verification works.
Why The License Requirement Exists.
Hair extensions installed by an unlicensed person can damage natural hair, cause scalp injury, and create liability for everyone involved. Most states already require a cosmetology license to perform the service legally. The license isn't a formality — it's two years of training in chemistry, scalp anatomy, color theory, sanitation, and client safety.
When suppliers sell to anyone with a credit card, three things happen:
- Untrained people install extensions on themselves or family — and the resulting damage gets blamed on the brand.
- Licensed stylists compete with untrained installers who undercharge because they don't carry liability insurance.
- The professional category gets diluted. The next "30% off" sale that hits Instagram drags retail prices down for everyone.
License gating fixes all three at once. The supplier protects the trade. The stylist protects her margin. The client protects her hair.
How Alma Verifies.
The verification flow is built into the ALMAPRO application:
- You enter your name, email, and salon information.
- You upload a photo of your active cosmetology license. State, license number, and expiration date must be visible.
- We review every application personally. We're not running an auto-approval algorithm — Will or a member of the Alma team looks at your license, confirms it's valid in your state, and either approves or asks for clarification.
- Approval typically takes one business day. Most stylists who apply Monday morning are ordering by Tuesday.
- Once approved, you see ALMAPRO wholesale pricing on every product, every collection, every checkout. There is no separate retail tier.
If your license expires, your access pauses. You upload the renewed license, we re-verify, and access resumes. We don't kick you out — we keep the gate working.
What Counts As A Valid License.
- Active cosmetology license issued by your state's Board of Cosmetology or equivalent regulatory body.
- Active barber license in states that license barbers to perform extension services (varies by state — we'll confirm during review).
- Active esthetician license only in states where the license scope explicitly includes hair extension installation. Most states do not — please confirm before applying.
What does not qualify: cosmetology school enrollment without graduation, expired licenses, instructor licenses without an active practitioner license, online "extension certifications" from non-state-issued programs.

- An Amazon listing. No retail third-party distribution.
- A "salon partner" tier with discount codes for your client. Doesn't exist. Won't exist.
The protection is the product.
State-By-State Notes.
Most U.S. states license cosmetology and require it for paid hair extension services. A few states (e.g., Alabama, Florida, Connecticut, Pennsylvania) have specific extension certifications or natural-hair-styling endorsements that affect scope of practice. We accept the standard cosmetology license in all 50 states. If your state has a specific extension-only license, mention it on your application.
If you're licensed outside the U.S., we accept Canadian provincial cosmetology licenses (Ontario, BC, Alberta verified) and EU equivalents on a case-by-case basis. Book a concierge call if you want to confirm before applying.
How To Apply.
